Pro-Am memories

Published 7/29/2009 in Commentary : Editorial

Will another future PGA star be roaming the fairways of Garden City golf courses this week?

Of the golf professionals descending on Buffalo Dunes and The Golf Club at Southwind and gunning for a Southwest Kansas Pro-Am title, many will have a dream of one day making it to the PGA Tour and even competing at the highest level in major championships.

And they have yet another former Pro-Am player to look to as an example. Stewart Cink, who recently won the British Open to capture his first major, is among the more notable Pro-Am alumni.

Other Pro-Am players who also own major championships are Jim Furyk, Lee Janzen and Steve Jones — all U.S. Open winners — and Tom Weiskopf, who won the British Open.

Bruce Vaughan of Hutchinson, a local Pro-Am favorite and multiple winner of the event, added his name to the list of major winners last year with an exciting comeback win in the Senior British Open.

This week brings the 30th Southwest Kansas Pro-Am, with the golf competition scheduled to begin with shootout events for men and women, followed by two days of Pro-Am tournament play Friday and Saturday.

The final day of competition for the pros comes Sunday.

It should be enough to satisfy even the most passionate golf junkie. Yet as fun and interesting as the golf may be, anyone who has played in or followed the Pro-Am knows there's much more at stake than golf trophies.

Proceeds from the week's events benefit St. Catherine Hospital's Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NBICU), with funds continuing to help the hospital equip and maintain a state-of-the-art unit for newborns with special needs.

The NBICU has been a blessing for families in many ways, including giving them the option of staying close to home instead of having to head elsewhere for the intensive care their newborns need.

So the Pro-Am is about more than golf, and the memorable competition that has become an annual tradition on Garden City's fine golf courses.

It's first and foremost about saving and nurturing young lives, and helping families create the kind of memories they'll cherish for a lifetime.
