Devers ties for second

Clay Devers walked off the ninth hole at the Golf Club at Southwind feeling good about his round.

He had started play on Sunday in the final round of the Southwest Kansas Pro-Am at 2-under-par and he finished the tournament 2-under after an even-par 71. All of it was good enough to propel him into a second-place tie at the end with fellow competitor Zen Brown. But there was one thing Devers wasn't so impressed with about his game — his putting.

"I played really good, I just didn't make one putt," Devers said. "My one birdie was a tap-in, my one bogey was a three-putt. I missed a three-footer."

Devers' one bogey came on hole 15 (which was No. 6 on Sunday as everyone playing in the championship round started on hole No. 10). He had parred the first five holes. Devers, from Lake Quivira, bounced back on the par-4, No. 1, to start his back nine with a birdie.

From there he played steady, keeping himself in the hunt for the title of the Pro-Am he has played in for 15 years. Ryan Veermeer, who started the day two shots ahead of Devers closed out the round winning by three strokes when he birdied his 18th hole of the day. The runner-up finish is Devers' best at the Pro-Am.

"Disappointed in finishing second? No." Devers said. "I'm not that guy. I got beat by Ryan and Ryan played great on the final round."

Coming into the tournament that started Friday, Devers said he felt good about his chances this year. Out of the game for eight months while he rehabilitated his right elbow from a torn ligament and tendon, Devers wasn't bothered by the wrapped elbow throughout the three-day event.

"Out here you have to putt on a fine line," Devers said. "You have to either putt your ball on the edge or inside and I don't do that well. So for me to putt well I have to be on my game. You can't just whack it up there and the greens were three times faster.

"I've been putting great. Something's wrong, I'll go figure it out and that will be that."
