Roderick: Keep kids reading this summer
By The Telegram
This week, we talk with Leigh Ann Roderick, literacy coordinator with USD 457 Garden City, and Roy Cessna, public information coordinator with USD 457, about preventing kids from falling behind over the summer.
Roderick discusses some research that shows that kids who don't read over the summer stand to lose much of what they've learned in the past school year, which after a few years can leave them well behind their peers.
But it just takes a bit of summer reading to keep loss from occurring, according to Roderick. She gives a variety of ideas for making sure kids fit reading into their summer, including Books on the Bus (B.O.B.), a summer bookmobile program operated by the school district.
Also during the podcast, we hear from Plymell Elementary School librarian and teacher Kerma Crouse, who helps operate B.O.B., along with B.O.B. visitors Jonathan Castillo, 11, and Luis Castillo, 8.
