Quakenbush: College has come long way in 90 years

Garden City Community College will have much to celebrate this Sunday when it marks its 90th anniversary with a campus party, according to GCCC Information Services Director Steve Quakenbush.
In this week's edition of Talk of the Town, Quakenbush explains the humble beginnings of GCCC and how the college has grown since — in its enrollment numbers, campus size, program offerings and role in the community.
Garden City Community College 90th Birthday Celebration
1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday on the GCCC campus, 801 Campus Drive
FREE BARBECUE MEAL
1:30 to 3 p.m. (or until gone) in front of library, slightly to the south
- Catered by GCCC Meats Team with Block & Bridle Club
- Available to first 400 people
- Dining tables on grass in northwest quadrant of campus mall
LIVE BANDS
1:30 to 3:30 p.m.
- Third Degree (Blues and blues rock) in front of the Academic Building
- Fulton Street Band (Sixties rock and classic country) in front of the Dennis Perryman Athletic Complex
- Los Hermanos Ortiz y Amigos (The Ortiz Brothers & Friends) (Traditional Mexican and Tex-Mex selections) in front of the Pauline Joyce Fine Arts Building.
DEPARTMENT OPEN HOUSES
1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at campus buildings/other locations
- Displays and demonstrations
- Interactive opportunities
- Pony rides, fire truck rides, John Deere tractor rides and other features
- Invitation postcards to potential students and families
CHILDREN'S GAMES
1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. on campus mall
- Various games and activities
- Inflatable game
- Prizes
- Times capsule scholarship contest for grade school children
CAMPUS ACTIVITIES
1:30 to 4 p.m. on campus mall and surrounding locations
- Booths, games, contests and demonstrations, stretching north from mall to Dennis Perryman Athletic Complex
- Booths also stretching from Warren Fouse Science-Math Building to north side of Student and Community Services Center
- Staged by SGA organizations, athletic teams and community organizations
- Action also planned at batting cages (Buster Baseball Academy)

2 to 3 p.m. during celebration over campus (plus Memorial Stadium)
- 20-30 views of crowd, activities, buildings, campus

ERDENE CORLEY SIMULATION LAB DEDICATION
2:30 to 3:30 p.m. at Physical Therapy Lab/Penka Building
- Ceremony 20 to 30 minutes
- Live music by GCCC String Ensemble
- Open touring after ceremony
- Advance invitations going out by mail
COMMUNITY CONTESTS
1:30 to 4 p.m. outdoors on mall during celebration
- Third grade college scholarship contest, with entries placed on-site in time capsule.
- Victory Bell contest, with entrants guessing note, weight and original cost of 1901 bell/Ringing bell.
BIRTHDAY CAKE
3:30 to 4:30 p.m., outside in front of library, slightly to the north
- Cake and iced tea for 400
- Short ceremony at 3:30 p.m.

- Reseal and open again in 2044 (125th birthday)
- Include third-grade scholarship forms, photos and souvenirs from celebration, other items
