"Eat Smart, Live Long" classes offered

Published 3/17/2010 in Commentary : Columns

The Senior Center and Finney County Extension will be offering a free new four-part series titled "Eat Smart, Live Long." The classes, which begin Thursday, March 25, will begin and end with 10 minutes of chair exercises. Between the exercising, information will be given on incorporating more fruits and vegetables into our lives. Topics will include reaching your goals step by step, challenges and solutions, colorful and classic favorites, and eating smart and spending less.

When older adults eat at least three-and-a-half cups of fruits and vegetables daily they benefit from more vitamins, minerals and fiber, maintain energy levels, maintain regularity, prevent or delay the effects of chronic conditions such as obesity, hypertension and heart disease, and maintain strong and healthy bones.

Adding 30 minutes of physical activities most days may prevent or delay the effects of chronic disease, let you feel better, decrease stress, anxiety and depression, help control weight, build and maintain healthy bones, muscles and joints, improve strength, increase balance and reduce the risk of falling and improve sleep.

This free series of classes begins at 1:30 p.m. March 25. It will continue weekly for four weeks with the final session on Thursday, April 15. Reservations are requested. To sign up, please call 272-3620.
