Live on Stage offers another strong lineup

Every year, the Garden City community turns out a variety of affordable entertainment options of outstanding quality.

And once again, organizers of the Southwest Kansas Live on Stage program have contributed to that effort with a lineup of shows sure to please many ages and musical palates.

For 2010-11, SWKLOS has announced six diverse performances:

  • Buddy Jewell, a country music artist and Nashville star.
  • Dallas Brass, a group with a unique blend of traditional brass instruments.
  • White Ghost Shivers, a six-piece ensemble blending the absurd and the sublime.
  • Destino, award-winning Canadian tenors who deliver pop with an opera flair.
  • The Gibson Brothers, bluegrass musicians known for their fancy picking and tight harmonies.
  • Jim Witter, a pianist who takes audiences on a musical journey through the songs of pop superstars Billy Joel and Elton John.

Amazingly, SWKLOS memberships for all six shows cost just $50 for adults and $30 for students. Families can buy the season's shows for $125 (with a limit of two adults per family.)

Considering the quality, the concert series is a steal. Concert-goers easily could pay double the price of a season ticket for six shows here to attend just one decent show elsewhere.

As an added value, those who don't have a SWKLOS membership can sign up for the 2010-11 season and receive free admission to remaining shows for the current season, with six-man acapella troupe Chapter 6 on April 12, and Daniel Rodriguez, the singing New York City policeman who found fame with his patriotic performances, on May 10.

The remaining shows are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Garden City High School's Clifford Hope Auditorium. More information on all shows is available on the SWKLOS Web site, swks-liveonstage.org.

SWKLOS knows the importance of trying to draw a diverse audience of patrons. Now, during trying economic times, that's become all the more important.

Access to good entertainment that improves local quality of life shouldn't be taken for granted in a community this size. Because of that, the SWKLOS program warrants enthusiastic community support.

That the organization offers such a bargain only sweetens the deal.
