Austin: Smokers should consider others

Fifty-six years ago, on June 26, 1953, I was drafted into the U.S. Army. I remember vividly taking one step forward with my hand up, to protect and defend my country and our rights. Yes, I smoked then. Cigarettes were 10 cents a pack. When I was discharged, cigarettes were 25 cents a pack. I could see my money going up in smoke. This was before it was deemed a hazard. It would be interesting to know how many veterans are being treated for lung or throat cancer. And how many have died from this. I am eligible to belong to all four organizations. I belong to three of them. But over the years have decided that secondhand smoke is distasteful. I have no objection to people smoking, just their consideration of others.
