Charles David Helfrich
CIMARRON -- Charles David Helfrich, 20, died Monday, Jan. 21, 2008, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City, after a lifetime battle with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.
He was born July 31, 1987, in Dodge City, to David and Beth Kliesen Helfrich. He graduated in 2006 from Cimarron High School and was a student at Garden City Community College. He was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church at Ingalls and the Muscular Dystrophy Association and was involved with the Muscular Dystrophy Summer Camp. He loved being with his family and was an avid sports fan.
Survivors include his parents, of Cimarron; a sister, Janae Helfrich of the home; and his grandparents, Stanley and Janet Kliesen of Wright. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Cletus and Eleanor Helfrich; and his great-grandparents, Alfred Helfrich, and Norb and Clara Irsik.
Vigil service will be 7 p.m. Thursday at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, Ingalls, with the Rev. Robert A. Schremmer officiating. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Friday at the church, with the Rev. Schremmer and the Rev. Floyd McKinney officiating. Burial will follow at St. Andrews Cemetery in Wright.
Visitation hours are noon to 5 p.m. Thursday at Swaim Funeral Home Chapel, Cimarron. Personal condolences may be sent at www.swaimfuneralhome.com. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Muscular Dystrophy Association or Western Kansas Community Foundation for a scholarship at Garden City Community College, both in care of the funeral home.
