LAKIN -- Edith M. Hubbard, 101, died Monday, May 5, 2008, at High Plains Retirement Village in Lakin.
She was born July 23, 1906, in Avard, Okla., to Alvert N. and Orpha Edmonston Barber. She attended schools in Avard and in Protection. The family moved to Kearny County in the late 1920s, living on the Thorpe Ranch.
On Aug. 10, 1929, she married Virgil Leroy Hubbard in Holly, Colo. They lived in Kearny County, where she helped her husband with the farming and ranching operation. She did the cooking and sewing and raised chickens, and her special interests included crocheting, reading and her flower garden. In the 1980s, she was proud to have won a blue ribbon at the county fair with her crocheted doily. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Lakin.
Her husband died July 12, 1971. She also was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Claude and Lawrence; a daughter, Norma Jean Hornbaker; three sisters, Violet Haug, Neva Nunn and an infant sister; and three brothers, Wes, Ralph and Royce Barber.
Survivors include two sons, Eldon Hubbard of Stockton, Mo., and Vernon Hubbard of Joplin, Mo.; two daughters, Glenda Amerine of Pine, Colo., and Carolyn "Kay" Anderson of Lakin; a sister, Zelma Rust of Elkhart; 16 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church, Lakin, with the Rev. Roberta Karchner officiating. Burial will be in Lakin Cemetery.
Visitation hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home, Lakin. Condolences may be sent at garnandfh@sbcglobal.net. Memorials are suggested to First Presbyterian Church or High Plains Retirement Village, both in care of the funeral home.
