Esther Keene

ULYSSES -- Esther Keene, 89, died Monday, March 24, 2008, at Stanton County Long Term Care Unit in Johnson City.

She was born Dec. 23, 1918, in Burns, to Simon F. and Jessie Hutchinson Crites. She graduated from high school in Burns and El Dorado Junior College in El Dorado.

On Aug. 23, 1939, she married William Lesley Keene in Missouri. In 1954, the family moved from Pea Ridge, Ark., to Ulysses. She served as president for the Pink Ladies, was a member of the Kitchen Kuties, Glory Singers and First Baptist Church of Ulysses, and traveled with the Grant County Senior Center.

Her husband died May 11, 1979. She also was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Lesley Eugene; four sisters, Phyllis Harris, Jesse Frances Tyson, Lucille Diehl and Zilpha Jeppson; and a brother, Leslie Crites.

Survivors include four daughters, Sara Lorine Myers of Ulysses, Wilma Irene Myers of Wamego, Judy Kay Gaff of Caney, and Sharon Jean Budion of Sylvania, Ohio; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Country View Baptist Church, Ulysses, with the Rev. Sam Bynum officiating. Burial will follow in Ulysses Cemetery.

Visitation is until 8 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Ulysses. Memorials are suggested to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, in care of the funeral home, 405 W. Grant Ave., Ulysses, KS 67880.
