Arthur V. Joiner

LAKIN -- Arthur V. Joiner, 89, died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2008, at Kearny County Hospital in Lakin.

He was born May 31, 1918, near Uniontown in Bourbon County, to Joseph Edward and Edith Belle Bailey Joiner.

He grew up on a farm in the Uniontown area. After graduating from Uniontown High School, he worked in Wichita.

On Dec. 26, 1941, he married Violet I. Kuhlman in Wichita.

After their marriage, they lived on a farm near Uniontown until moving to the August Kuhlman farm in north Kearny County in March 1944, after her father's death.

On Nov. 10, 1995, they moved into Lakin.

A lifetime farmer, Mr. Joiner also had worked part time at Kearny County Feeders for 10 years. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church of Lakin, Lakin Co-op, Garden City Co-op and Farm Bureau, and served on the North Kearny School Board, East Hibbard Township Board and Kearny County Extension Board, serving as chairman of the board for one year. He served as a 4-H leader for several years and was instrumental in starting the Hilanders 4-H Club.

He enjoyed working in his yard and taking his daily walks.

His wife died Feb. 27, 2002. He also was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include two daughters, Carolyn Andrews of Bartlesville, Okla., and Catherine Urie of Lakin; a son, Carl Joiner of Kingwood, Texas; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Lakin, officiated by Robert Roberts, pastor. Burial will be in Lakin Cemetery.

Visitation is until 8 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Lakin. Condolences may be sent at garnandfh@sbcglobal.net. Memorials are suggested to Immanuel Lutheran Church or Kearny County Hospital Foundation, both in care of the funeral home, 508 N. Main St., Lakin, KS 67860.
