ULYSSES -- Lucille Schartz, 89, died Saturday, April 26, 2008, at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital in Ulysses.

She was born Oct. 3, 1918, in Tyrone, Okla., to William and Lola McConn¬­aughy Carlile. She grew up in Grant County, graduating from Grant County Rural High School in 1939. After high school, she moved to Liberal and worked as a waitress.

On April 24, 1940, she married Cecil Niles in Scott City. They lived in Baca County, Colo., where they farmed and ranched and raised their two daughters. After her divorce, she moved to Cheyenne Wells, Colo., where she owned and operated a bowling alley and a bar for about five years before returning to Grant County. On Dec. 10, 1952, she married Fredrick Schartz in Iliff, Colo., with whom she had one daughter. He died May 19, 1976. She also was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Pete Carlile.

In addition to farming, ranching, working as a waitress in several establishments and as a cook at Crocker Theatre, Mrs. Schartz was a dietary manager for Western Prairie Care Home for more than 20 years. She was a member of Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Altar Society and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary of Liberal. Her interests included bowling, gardening, dancing and crocheting.

Survivors include three daughters, Loretta Stever of Las Vegas, and Sheila Fuhrmann and Joycelyn Wickwar, both of Ulysses; a sister, Fredia Harrel of Liberal; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Vigil service will be 7 p.m. Thursday at Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Ulysses. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Friday at the church, with the Revs. James P. Dieker and John J. Maes officiating. Burial will follow at Ulysses Cemetery.

Visitation hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home, Ulysses. Memorials are suggested to Western Prairie Care Home, in care of the funeral home, 405 W. Grant Ave., Ulysses, KS 67880.
