Hazel Eleanor Stullken

LAKIN -- Hazel Eleanor Stullken, 95, died Saturday, March 15, 2008, at Kearny County Hospital in Lakin.

She was born Dec. 24, 1912, in Pottawattomie County, Iowa, to Charles and Mabel Rinehart. She attended country schools in the Missouri towns of Bethany, Pleasant Ridge and Ridgeway before her father died in 1922 and her mother moved to Denver to be with sisters. She attended seventh grade in Denver and then the family returned to Bethany, where she attended school through the first year of high school. In 1928, the family moved to Lakin. Three years later, she returned to high school in Lakin and graduated as salutatorian with the class of 1934. She grew up quilting, knitting and sewing, learning from her mother who was a seamstress by trade.

In 1934, she married Leslie Gerhard Stullken. They lived in Denver, Garden City, Bazine, Manhattan and Lakin. In Bazine, she ran the linotype and "picked type" while her husband published the Bison Bee. She later worked at The Lakin Independent as a proofreader, and running the linotype, the job press and the folder.

During her career in Lakin, she was an active bowler going to several national bowling tournaments, was active in Lakin Methodist Church in various committee roles, belonged to a pinochle group, was proud to be a blood donor, was an active charter member of the Kearny County Historical Society, and continued to knit and quilt.

Mrs. Stullken retired to a three-day week at the Independent when she was 65, retired completely for a brief time at age 70 until returning as a proofreader, doing that until she turned 80. Since retirement she has been involved with various Senior Center activities.

Her husband died in 1959. She also was preceded in death by a son, Ray Karl Stullken; and a half sister, Mattie Cadle Stout.

Survivors include a son, Lloyd Stullken of Topeka; a daughter, Karen Riddle of Topeka; a brother, Elman Rinehart of Overland Park; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and numerous stepgrandchildren, stepgreat-grandchildren and stepgreat-great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church in Lakin, with the Rev Tod Anthony officiating. Burial will be in Lakin Cemetery.

Visitation hours are noon to 8 p.m. Thursday and 9 to 11 a.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home, Lakin. Memorials are suggested to Lakin Methodist Church or Kearny County Historical Society, both in care of the funeral home.
