Anton 'Tony' Miller

Anton "Tony" William Miller, 89, of Brady, Neb., died Thursday, Oct. 2, 2008, at Gothenburg Memorial Hospital.

He was born May 21, 1919, to George and Nellie Miller on a family farm north of Gothenburg, Neb. He attended School District 161 through eighth grade and later worked for farmers and ranchers in the Platte River Valley.

He was drafted Nov. 5, 1941, and inducted at Fort Crook in Omaha, Neb. He went to Fort Leav¬­enworth, then Camp Polk. He was assigned to Co. E 32nd Armored Regiment. He was a tank commander and platoon leader most of World War II.

He participated in the campaigns of Normandy, northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes, central Europe and the Battle of the Bulge. He commanded seven tanks, and he was wounded three separate times and awarded the Purple Heart with three oak leaf clusters.

He was discharged in June 1945 with the rank of staff sergeant.

He married JoAnne Lawrence July 31, 1948, in North Platte, Neb. He reenlisted in 1949 and was stationed overseas with his wife. He was discharged in February 1954 and returned to Nebraska, where he farmed and ranched near Hershey and Maxwell before moving to a farm/ranch north of Brady in 1964.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Earl and George Jr.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Terry, of Garden City, Steve, of Laramie, Wyo., and Doug, of Kearney, Neb.; a sister, Edna Long, of Arnold, Neb.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services and lunch are 11 a.m. Monday at Zion Lutheran Church in Gothenburg, with Pastor Don Wilken officiating. Burial is 2 p.m. at Fort McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell, with military honors by the Gothenburg Firing Squad and U.S. Army.

Visitation is from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. today and 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at Blase-Strauser Memorial Chapel, 620 N. 10th St. in Gothenburg, Neb.

Memorials are suggested to the Disabled American Veterans or Gothenburg Memorial Hospital Foundation and may be sent to Blase-Strauser Memorial Chapel at 620 N. 10th St., Gothenburg, NE 69138.
