Merl F. Wilson

HOLCOMB -- Merl F. Wilson, 90, died Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2008, at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City.

He was born Feb. 22, 1918, on a farm northeast of Sayre, Okla., to Edsel and Lela Guest Wilson. He grew up in the Sayre area and attended country schools.

On Oct. 31, 1937, he married Argy Bell Brownlee in Elk City, Okla. They continued to live in the Sayre area until moving to Holcomb in 1950. A farmer, Mr. Wilson later worked as the head supervisor of maintenance for Garden City Community College for 16 years. After his retirement, he delivered mail to rural residents. He attended Garden City Church of the Nazarene, served for many years on the Garden City Teachers Credit Union Board, served as a 4-H leader for several years and was involved in church activities. He enjoyed gardening, yard work, golfing, working on televisions and attending his grandchildren's sporting events.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Shirley Kaiser of Burchard, Neb., and Merlene Pettz of Lawson, Mo.; five grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Ruby Janell Wilson; three brothers, Woodrow, Glen and DeWitt Wilson; and a grandson, Mark Kaiser.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Garden City Church of the Nazarene, with the Rev. Don Patrick officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City. Visitation hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Condolences may be sent at garnandfh@sbcglobal.net. Memorials are suggested to Church of the Nazarene or St. Catherine Hospice, both in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St., Garden City, KS 67846.
