William 'Bill' Cook

SYRACUSE -- William Jay "Bill" Cook, 55, died Friday, June 6, 2008, at his home in Lawrence.

He was born Oct. 11, 1952, in Syracuse, to William J.R. and Leota Ione Pomeroy Cook. He graduated from Syracuse High School in 1970 and received a bachelor's degree in education from the University of Kansas in 1976 with minors in biology and microbiology.

Mr. Cook was a science teacher at Linwood High School for two years, worked at Hallmark Cards from 1979 to 1988, then left his position as maintenance supervisor to be a stay-at-home father for his preschool children. He obtained a Master Electrician's license in 1994 and formed C&Z Electric, an electrical contracting company offering residential and commercial services. He most recently had worked as a process engineer at Sauer-Danfoss in Lawrence.

In 1975, he married Tess Zagaruyka. The marriage was dissolved in 2002, but their friendship continued.

Survivors include a son, William Z. Cook of McLouth; a daughter, Katrina Z. Cook of Lawrence; four brothers, David Ray Cook of Lamar, Colo., Tracy Alan Cook of Derby, Jeffrey Dean Cook of Johnson City, and Darrel Glenn Cook of Syracuse; and two sisters, Linda Cook of Syracuse, and Cheryl Lynn Gerard of Coolidge. He was preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial service will begin at 10 a.m. MDT Saturday at the First United Methodist Church in Syracuse.
