Starr H. Smith

Starr H. Smith, 87, died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2008 at the Columbine Manor in Salida, Colo.

She was born on November 16, 1920, in Charleston, Mo., the daughter of Malcolm D. and Cora Ree Cofer Howell. A resident of Garden City since 1935, moving from Topeka, she was a homemaker.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the UMW, Chp. X PEO, Salmagundi, EHU, the Sorosis Club, was a past volunteer at St. Catherine Hospital, had served on the Finney County Historical Society and the Garden City Public Library Board as well as many others all in Garden City. She also belonged to the Red Hat Society of Salida, Colo.

On March 2, 1941, she married Howard B. Smith in Topeka. He died Dec. 16, 2003, in Garden City.

Survivors include two sons Leo Smith of Thornton, Colo., and Malcolm Smith of Durham, N.H.; daughters, Nancy Bornemann of Nathrop, Colo. and Mary Lou Cook of Lamar, Colo.; one sister, Grace Crask of Los Osos, Calif.; 11 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and numerous nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Sara Ann Smith; a brother, Malcolm Howell and sisters Mary Heil, Alice Trotter and Nancy Wilke.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Price & Sons Funeral Home in Garden City, with Rev. Brenda Fluellen presiding.

Interment will be at the Valley View Cemetery in Garden City.

Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Price & Sons Funeral Home.

The family requests memorials be given to the Finney County Historical Society or to the Lee Richardson Zoo, both in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home of Garden City.
