Sarah Parks

ULYSSES — Sarah J. Parks, 101, died Monday, June 29, 2009, at Stanton County Long Term Care Unit in Johnson City.

She was born Aug. 24, 1907, in Beaver County, Okla., to Peter and Sarah Klassen Boese. As a child, she moved with her family by wagon to Meade and later to Montezuma.

On June 3, 1927, she married Raymond Parks in Hutchinson. They raised their family and lived in Montezuma for more than 30 years. He died April 20, 1961, shortly after moving to Ulysses and building their retirement home.

Mrs. Parks lived in Ulysses for nearly 50 years, becoming involved in church and community. She enjoyed gardening and volunteer work, receiving many achievement awards for her efforts. She was active in the Christian Church, Garden Club, Hospital Auxiliary and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Survivors include a son, Raymond Parks Jr. of Johnson City; a daughter, Dolores Ann Purcell of Ottawa; eight grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, four sisters and a grandson, Tommy Purcell.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. Friday at Shelton Memorial Christian Church in Ulysses, with the Rev. Bill Harrold officiating. Burial will follow at Ulysses Cemetery.

Visitation hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses. Memorials are suggested to Shelton Memorial Christian Church or the American Legion Auxiliary, both in care of the funeral home, 405 W. Grant Ave., Ulysses, KS 67880.
