Bobby R. Vanderpool

SYRACUSE -- Bobby R. Vanderpool, 68, drowned while snorkeling in the Bahamas on Monday, Jan. 14, 2008, while vacationing with his wife, Sandra, and friends.

He was born Sept. 17, 1939, in Cowgill, Mo., to Ralph and Helen Baker Vanderpool. He graduated from Syracuse High School and earned a bachelor's degree in accounting from Colorado State University. Following high school, he served four years in the U.S. Air Force.

On Aug. 7, 1959, he married Sandra A. Carter in Braymer, Mo. She survives.

Mr. Vanderpool began his career with State Farm Insurance in Greeley, Colo., and later transferred to Bloomington, Ill., where he worked in accounting. His last 25 years there, he managed the Mutual Fund/Investment Department. He retired Oct. 1, 2001.

He was active in church, serving as an elder, chairman of Christian education, trustee and usher at the Second Presbyterian Church in Bloomington. He spent a week each summer for eight years as a Senior High Church Camp Counselor at Lake Geneva, Wisc. He also was involved in Scouts, Little League, Parent Teacher Association and other school activities. His hobbies included golf, poetry, music and traveling, plus spending time with family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Charles Vanderpool, and one sister, Veda Franklin.

Survivors include his wife of Loveland, Colo.; two sons, Craig Vanderpool of White Stone, Va., and Brad Vanderpool of Denver; two brothers, Raymond Vanderpool of Syracuse and Leland Vanderpool of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; three sisters, Juanita Davis of Columbia, Mo., and Cheryl Vanderpool and Debbie Vanderpool of Florida; four grandchildren and two step grandchildren.

Funeral is at 10 a.m. MDT Wednesday at Syracuse Cemetery, Syracuse, with full military honors.
