Dorothy May Wampler

Dorothy May Wampler, 91, died Wednesday, June 18, 2008, at Homestead Health & Rehabilitation Center in Garden City.

She was born Feb. 28, 1917, in Garden City to E.O. and Ethel Stout Wampler.

After graduating from Garden City High School, Garden City Community College, Emporia State College and Greeley Teachers College, she taught math at Gray County Grade School. She later taught at schools in Manter, Goodland and Wellington, and she ended her 26-year career by teaching 10 years in Dodge City. She retired in 1966.

Ms. Wampler was a member of the First Methodist Church of Garden City. In 1998, she built Dorothy's Children's Library at Finney County Public Library in memory of her parents, and she often read stories to children during story time. She was an avid quilt maker, sewing them all by hand, and she collected sports memorabilia. She also enjoyed playing cards and watching sports, especially baseball.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, John and Clinton Wampler; and two sisters, Louise Wampler and Martha Morris.

Survivors include two nieces, one nephew and several great nieces and nephews.

Funeral is at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Price & Sons Funeral Home in Garden City, with the Rev. David Bell presiding.

Visitation hours are 1 to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Price & Sons Funeral Home in Garden City. Memorials are suggested to First United Methodist Church in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home, 620 N. Main St., Garden City, KS 67846.
