Harold A. Evans

Harold A. Evans, 88, died Saturday, Dec. 22, 2007, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

He was born May 15, 1919, in Del Norte, Colo., to Mevrel and Mary Ellen Perry Evans. He graduated from Canon City (Colo.) High School.

Mr. Evans had worked in the coal mines in Colorado in his early years and then lived in the Ulysses and Johnson City areas until moving to Garden City in 1966. He worked in the plumbing business for 50 years and also had done sheet metal work. He was a member of the Eagles Lodge and Harry H. Renick American Legion Post No. 9, and a life member of John J. Haskell Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2279, all in Garden City, and served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II, stationed at Okinawa. He enjoyed sports, fishing and traveling.

On May 28, 1939, he married Mildred Abbott in Canon City. She died Sept. 6, 2001. He also was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Jesse A. Evans; and a sister, Elizabeth Anne Evans.

Survivors include a son, Harold L. Evans of Winfield; a daughter, Mary Kathryn Rose of Garden City; two grandchildren, including David Rose of Garden City, with whom he lived; a great-granddaughter; and a sister, Lorraine Shafer of Canon City.

There will be no services.
