Gerald L. Schmidt

HUGOTON -- Gerald L. Schmidt, 82, of McPherson and formerly of Hugoton, died Saturday, July 26, 2008, at McPherson Memorial Hospital.

He was born March 29, 1926, in Hugoton, to Henry B. and Elsie O. Rich Schmidt.

A farmer, Mr. Schmidt was a member of the United Methodist Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion Post No. 406, all at Hugoton, American Legion in McPherson, Shriners of Salina, and the Royal Arch and Chapter Commandery at Liberal. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

On March 28, 1948, he married Dixie L. Youngren. She died in December 1999. He also was preceded in death by his parents.

On Aug. 31, 2002, he married Jackie R. Hornbuckle Lynch in Hugoton. She survives. Other survivors include two sons, G. Dennis Schmidt of Denver, and Wesley E. Schmidt of Rolla; two daughters, Nancy J. Miller of Liberal, and Rebecca P. Schmidt of Hugoton; three stepdaughters, Marcia Allen of Edmond, Okla., and Sue and Jan Murphy, both of Fort Worth, Texas; three brothers, James H. Schmidt of Hugoton, Richard G. Schmidt of Duncan, Okla., and Gary E. Schmidt of Oklahoma City; three grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

Graveside service will be 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in Hugoton Cemetery, officiated by Harry Cross, Kenneth Armstrong and Mahlon Cochran, ministers. Masonic graveside rites will be conducted by Hugoton Masonic Lodge No. 406, and military graveside rites will be conducted by Fort Riley Honor Guard.

Visitation is until 8 tonight at Paul's Funeral Home, Hugoton. Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church of Hugoton, in care of the funeral home, Box 236, Hugoton, KS 67951.
