George Perez

LAKIN -- George Perez, 55, died Friday, Oct. 3, 2008, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

He was born Aug. 29, 1953, in Poteet, Texas, to Juan and Rosie Nebarez Perez. The family lived in various places throughout the United States, residing in Campbellton, Texas for most of his childhood. In 1969, the family moved to Lakin.

On July 21, 1973, he married Teresa Perez in Lakin.

Mr. Perez worked most of his life farming in the fields with his father and later became a handyman painting houses. He was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church of Lakin, enjoyed playing his guitar and playing pool, and was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan.

Survivors include a son, Rick Perez of Lakin; a daughter, Christina Perez of Lakin; his mother, of Lakin; five brothers, Bobby, Adam, Noel and Lee Perez, all of Lakin, and Willy Perez of Garden City; three sisters, Janie Belt of Ulysses, Irene Perez of Garden City, and Mary Lou Higgins of Lakin; four grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father.

Vigil service and rosary will be 7 tonight at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Lakin. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church, with the Rev. Mike Helms as the celebrant. Burial will be in Lakin Cemetery.

Visitation is until 5:30 p.m. today at Garnand Funeral Home of Lakin. Condolences may be sent at garnandfh@sbcglobal.net. Memorials are suggested to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation or St. Anthony Catholic Church, both in care of the funeral home, 508 N. Main St., Lakin, KS 67860.
