Mabel V. Fox

ULYSSES — Mabel V. Fox, 98, died Monday, June 22, 2009, at Lane County Long-Term Care Center in Dighton.

She was born Nov. 10, 1910, in Burden, to Benjamin F. and Dosha A. Ridpath Simons.

On April 24, 1935, she married Lavern W. Fox in Winfield. He preceded her in death on June 19, 1995.

She had been a resident of Ulysses since 1950, then moved to Garden City Homestead Assisted Living in 2000, and recently to Lane County Long Term Care in Dighton. She obtained her teaching degree from Southwestern College in Winfield and taught school for a few years. Then, she became a receptionist for Dr. Virgil Ward DDS in Ulysses for many years. After retiring, she and her husband traveled to Texas for the winters and Colorado in the summers.

She enjoyed working crossword puzzles, reading and watching KU basketball. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Order of Eastern Star No. 471, both of Ulysses.

Survivors include two sons, James F. Fox of Dighton and Steven L. Fox of Garden City; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and a brother, Jack Simons.

Funeral is at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Garnand Funeral Home Chapel in Ulysses, with the Rev. Wayne Flanders officiating. Burial will follow at the Ulysses Cemetery, with burial rites conducted by the Order of the Eastern Star No. 471.

Visitation is from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Garden City United Methodist Church Caregivers or the Grant County Senior Center, both in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant Ave., Ulysses, 67880.
