J.B. Glassco

J.B. Glassco, 73, died Sunday, June 21, 2009, at Western Plains Medical Complex in Dodge City, after complications from back surgery.

He was born Sept. 17, 1935, on the family farm near Copeland, to Jay Bird and Lucille Emons Glassco. He grew up in Copeland, graduating from Copeland High School in 1953.

In 1956, Mr. Glassco started working at Unruh-Foster Inc., of Montezuma, where he later became a partner. He retired from the dealership in 1996. He also was part owner of Harry's Machine Shop of Dodge City and Prairieland Partners of Kansas. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Montezuma, served on the UMC Administrative Council, belonged to the Dodge City Country Club and was on the Board of Trustees at Presbyterian Manor of the Plains. He loved riding his motorcycles, golfing, flying, and being with his friends and family.

On June 15, 1958, he married Frances Jacques in Montezuma. She died April 12, 1999. He also was preceded in death by his parents.

On June 4, 2005, he married Teri Hawkins Powers in Montezuma. She survives. Other survivors include a son, Scott Glassco of Montezuma; a daughter, Shannon Moore of Montezuma; a stepdaughter, Nicole Ott of Wichita; two stepsons, Nick Powers of Manhattan and Nathan Powers of Dodge City; two sisters, Yvonne Robertson of Ulysses and Valetta Snyder of Dodge City; and seven grandchildren.

A memorial service will begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church of Dodge City, with the Rev. Jerry Odle officiating.

Friends may sign the registry from noon to 8 p.m. today at Swaim Funeral Home, Dodge City. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today. Personal condolences may be left at www.swaimfuneralhome.com. Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church of Montezuma, in care of the funeral home, 1901 Sixth Ave., Dodge City, KS 67801.
