Harry E. Jenks

Harry E. Jenks, 78, Lakin, died Sunday, June 21, 2009, at Kearny County Hospital in Lakin.

He was born Jan. 14, 1931, in Lakin, to Ernest F. "Ernie" and Otella "Dolly" Shafer Jenks.

He was raised in Lakin and graduated from Lakin High School in 1949. After high school, Mr. Jenks worked on many farms in the Kearny County area before joining the Army in 1951. While in the Army, he was stationed in Okinawa, Japan, where he was schooled as a heavy equipment operator. He returned to Lakin in 1953 and began working for Acid Engineer.

On March 5, 1955, he married Patricia J. Kelly at The First Christian Church in Garden City. After their marriage, the couple moved to Elkhart, where they lived for 45 years. While in Elkhart, he worked for different oil field companies for 10 years before becoming owner and operator of Harry's Welding Service for 35 years. After retiring, the couple moved back to Lakin, where he worked at Home Depot in Garden City, then at Main Street Supply, and lastly he was the Oasis car wash caretaker in Lakin.

He enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting, snow skiing and spending time with his family and his friends.

He was a member of Isis Shrine, Santa Fa Shrine Club and The United Methodist Church in Lakin, and he was a 50-year Masonic Lodge member (recently Emerald Lodge No. 285), a 50-year Order of Eastern Star (recently No. 244) and a lifetime member of the VFW.

Survivors include his wife, of the home; two daughters, Barbara L. Rohn of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Tammie D. Caffee of Tripoli, Libya; two brothers, Glen Jenks of Lakin and Max Jenks of Jasper, Texas; a sister, Norma Klotz of Meade; four grandsons; and a great-granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Dorles Jenks.

Funeral is at 2 p.m. Friday at The United Methodist Church in Lakin, with the Rev. Kent Little officiating. Burial will follow at Lakin Cemetery. Visitation is from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and 9 to 11 a.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home in Lakin.
