Melvin Dale Fry Sr.

Melvin Dale Fry Sr., 77, died Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2008, at his home in Garden City.

He was born Nov. 11, 1930, in Pittsburg, to Joseph Dale and Hattie Charlton Wilson Fry. He graduated from Liberal High School in 1948. In 1949, the family moved to Garden City.

After serving in the U.S. Army, Mr. Fry returned to Garden City, where he was the owner/operator of Mel's Forklift Service. He was a member of First Christian Church of Garden City, was past president of the Optimist Club, was a former Scout Master of Troop 1 and was active in the development of Spanish Peaks Scout Ranch, served as a Garden City volunteer fireman for more than 30 years, was a past chairman of the Garden City Housing Authority, and was a lifetime member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

On April 4, 1953, he married Violet M. Dreiling in Garden City. She survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Judy Anderson of Lakin, and Ann Ruward of Powell, Wyo.; four sons, Melvin Fry Jr. of Garden City, Gary Fry of Bartlesville, Okla., Steve Fry Sr. of Mulvane, and Dennis Fry of Edmond, Okla.; a sister, Jeanette Parks of Garden City; 20 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a granddaughter, Tammi Anderson.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at First Christian Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Paul Klaus officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, with the family present from 6 to 8 tonight. Condolences may be sent at garnandfh@sbcglobal.net. Memorials are suggested to St. Catherine Hospice, in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St., Garden City, KS 67846.
