Alice Bamberger

LAKIN -- Alice Nadine Pittaway Bamberger, 88, died Monday, Feb. 1, 2010, at her home in Wichita.

She was born Sept. 29, 1921, in Trego County, to Harold and Adela Pittaway.

On Sept. 29, 1939, she married Lloyd Bamberger in Jetmore. They made their home in Hodgeman County. During this time, she started the first kindergarten as a volunteer and founded the Hanston Library. At age 40, she began her college career at Dodge City Community College. She received a bachelor's degree at Fort Hays State University and continued by earning her master's degree in education from Southwestern College.

Mrs. Bamberger started her teaching career at Larned State Hospital, where she pioneered the Special Education program for Emotionally Disturbed Adolescents. She continued teaching in Lyons, Garden City and Pratt and ended in Wichita. She enjoyed her retirement years by being a world traveler and also worked as a nanny and respite care provider, as well as after-hours staff for Century 21 Advantage. She was a life-long follower of the United Methodist Church, dedicated her life to improving her community by volunteering and serving others, and supported Trees for Life, The Election Commission, the Red Cross and others.

Survivors include two sisters, Gladys Church and Mildred Law of Jetmore; four daughters, Karen Sato of Los Gatos, Calif., Cindy Sundell-Guy and Lisa Edwards, both of Wichita, and Tamara Bamberger of Port Angeles, Wash.; a son, Paul Bamberger of Hanston; numerous nieces and nephews; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Edwin "Skeeter" Pittaway; her parents; a sister, Lynn; and her husband.

A Celebration of Life service will begin at 10:30 a.m. March 6 at the Jetmore United Methodist Church.

Memorials are suggested to Hanston Library, Hanston United Methodist Church or Jetmore United Methodist Church. Memorials and condolences may be sent to Box 86, Hanston, KS 67849.

Chapel of the Roses Mortuary, Lakin, is in charge of arrangements.
