Richard Roots

Richard Dean Roots, 79, of Cherokee, Okla., died Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010, in Enid, Okla.

He was born May 13, 1930, in Wilmore, to Ralph Wesley and Mildred Esther Nicholson Roots. After graduating from Hardtner High School, he served in the U.S. Army, where he was a construction engineer.

On May 28, 1953, he married Beverly Jo Daughhetee in Medicine Lodge. For 25 years, they lived in Holcomb, where he served on the city council and the recreation commission. In 1985, they moved to Cherokee. He worked as a carpenter all of his life, often doing small jobs for the elderly for free.

Mr. Roots was a member of American Legion Post No. 0175 at Hardtner, Veteran of Foreign Wars at Garden City and Fraternal Order of Eagles in Garden City since 1967. He loved fishing, particularly at Great Plaines Lake, and enjoyed the company of his grandpups, Rose Marie and Annalisa Mae.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Yolanda Roots of Cherokee; and a brother, Russell Roots of Alva, Okla. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son; and a brother, Raymond Roots.

Funeral will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hardtner United Methodist Church, officiated by Elizabeth Kirkwood, pastor. Burial will be at Hardtner Cemetery under the direction of Marshall Funeral Home of Alva.
