Raymond W. Schuetz, 90, of Garden City, died Monday, Feb. 1, 2010, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

He was born July 26, 1919, in Seguin, to Mathias and Elizabeth Reinert Schuetz. He grew up in Seguin, graduated from Hoxie High School in 1939 and then remained in Seguin to help on the family farm before joining the U.S. Army in 1942 and serving during World War II. While in the Army, he was stationed in England with the Army Air Corps. In 1945, he returned to Seguin and continued working on the family farm.

On April 6, 1948, he married Edna M. Garner in Seguin. She preceded him in death as did his parents; a son, Gary Schuetz; a brother, Robert Schuetz; and two sisters, Isabell Peltier and Henritta Labarge.

In the early 1950s, Mr. Schuetz became owner and operator of his own Texaco gas station in Hoxie. He also drove the school bus for the Hoxie schools. In 1959, he moved to Garden City, where he farmed for Glenn Haas before working at the Kansas State Experiment Station. He retired from there in 1985 and then continued farming. He enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, reading and spending time at the zoo, and he loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He was a member of the Optimist Club and St. Mary Catholic Church.

Survivors include two sons, Dan Schuetz of Northampton, England, and Tom Schuetz of Holcomb; three daughters, Anita Dunlap of Dodge City, Pam Gottschall of Shawnee, and Erica Beeson of Scott City; a brother, Bernard Schuetz of Denver; three sisters, Pauline Perkins and Asella Lindstrom, both of Salina, and Josephine Goscha of Garden City; 21 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

Vigil service and rosary will begin at 7:30 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Funeral Mass will begin at 2 p.m. Friday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City. Celebrant will be the Rev. Efiri Matthias Selemobri, MSP. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and 9 to 11:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Condolences may be sent at garnandfh@sbcglobal.net. Memorials are suggested to Friends of Lee Richardson Zoo, in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St., Garden City, KS 67846.
