Cecil Baker

SUBLETTE -- Cecil W. Baker, 85, of Sublette and a former long-time resident of Garden City, died Monday, Feb. 1, 2010, at Bethel Home Inc., Montezuma, where he had been a resident.

He was born May 4, 1924, in Phillips County, to John and Vernie McClaughlin Baker. When he was 17, he went into the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II.

On June 12, 1943, he married Billie Marie Kingery in Phillipsburg. In 1964, they moved to Garden City, where they owned and operated Baker's A & W Drive In for many years. He built Western State Bank in 1973, retired in 1977 and had served as mayor of Garden City in 1974.

Mr. Baker was a member of Community Congregational Church of Garden City, was a 32nd degree Mason and a Shriner. His hobbies included camping, attending most of Sublette's sports activities, collecting caps and going to Manhattan to watch Shalee Lehning play college basketball, and he enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was proud of earning his high school diploma in 2002 from Phillipsburg High School and graduating with the class.

Survivors include two sons, Robert Cecil Baker of Garden City, and Richard Reno Baker of Sublette; two daughters, Treva Grotelueschen of Swanton, Ohio, and Kathy Sue Robson of Sublette; a sister, Betty Austin of Scott City; 17 grandchildren; and 41 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a daughter, Lynn Ann Duvall; and a sister, Viola Benedict.

Military graveside service will begin at 2 p.m. Friday at Valley View Cemetery, Garden City, with Dr. Bill Thomas presiding. Military honors will be conducted by Garden City Area Veterans Honor Guard.

Visitation hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Haskell County Funeral Home in Sublette. The family will receive friends at 1 p.m. Friday at Wheatlands Convention Center in Garden City. Memorials are suggested to Bethel Home Inc., in care of the funeral home, Box 607, Sublette, KS 67877.

Sorry to hear about the loss of CW. I use to work for him at the good old A&W. He taught me alot in the time I worked there. He will be missed.
