In 1945, the unit was returned to the United States. He received an honorable discharge on Oct. 1, 1945.

On Sept. 16, 1945, he married Helen Esther Hand in Partridge.

He was a former county Farm Bureau president and a member of Pioneer Electric Cooperative at Ulysses, serving on the board of directors for 18 years. He had been a resident of the Special Care Unit in Elkhart since Sept. 21, 2005, and moved to Stanton County Long Term Care Unit on Jan. 15.

In addition to his wife, other survivors include five sons, Dennis Martin Johns, Brian Lane Johns and Michael Sterling Owings, all of Wichita, Daryl Tremain Johns of Daphne, Ala., and Norman Dallas Johns of Richfield; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
