LeRoy Bernard Korte
LeRoy Ber¬nard Korte, 71, of Oxford, died Saturday, Nov. 24, 2007, at Kansas Heart Hospital in Wichita.
He was born April 19, 1936, at the family farm north of Rexford in the Hawkeye community, the third child of Henry and Mary Juenemann Korte. He attended Violenta School to the eighth grade and went to high school at Selden.
Mr. Korte helped various farmers before joining the U.S. Army and being stationed in Germany. After returning home, he worked at construction jobs, ranching and at service stations.
On Dec. 28, 1964, he married Carol Cheney at Sacred Heart Church in Colby. They lived in Colby, Oberlin and Burlington, Colo., and then moved to Rexford to help his father-in-law with his farming. Mr. Korte also drove a school bus for several years. After retiring from farming in 1995, he started working for Dennett Plumbing and Excavating in Oxford. He also worked at the Pecan Patch and helped Ken Patterson at the Auction House. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Oxford and the Knights of Columbus, and enjoyed yard work, spending time with his family and friends, playing the organ, hunting, fishing and traveling to Colorado Springs, Colo.
In addition to his wife, survivors include his children, Debbie Abernathy of Winfield, Norbert Korte of Selden, Robert Korte of Johnson City, Tony and Eric Korte, both of Rexford, Chris Korte of Beatrice, Neb., and Lori Reek of Oxford; numerous grandchildren, stepgrandchildren and great-grandchildren; three sisters, Delores Aumiller, Pat Mumm and Darlene Anderson, all of Colby; a brother, Alvin Korte of Garden City; several nieces; and a nephew. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Ronald and Norbert Korte.
Prayer vigil and rosary was 7 p.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Oxford. Mass of Christian Burial will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Selden. Burial will be at Selden Cemetery.
Visitation hours are noon until service time Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Selden. Condolences may be sent at www.oxfordfuneralservice.com.
