Geraldine 'Jerry' Phillips
ULYSSES -- Geraldine "Jerry" Phillips, 92, died Saturday, Nov. 24, 2007, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Lawrence.
She was born March 15, 1915, in Oklahoma City, to Leper Benton and Anna Belle Pearson Gill. She lost her father at age 3 and her mother at age 13 and then lived with Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Spires of Ulysses during the summers while attending Mt. Carmel Academy in Wichita for 10 years. After graduating from Mt. Carmel in 1931, she earned a diploma from the American Business College in Wichita.
On Jan. 19, 1933, she married Verlan Phillips in Medford, Okla. They resided in Ulysses and lived in Zapata, Texas for several winters after their retirement.
Mrs. Phillips was the owner of Phillips Furniture Store, helping with interior design for many homes in Ulysses, and was the owner and funeral director of Phillips Mortuary. She was involved in community service, served as Epsilon Sigma Alpha state president, belonged to the Business and Professional Women's organization, was an organist for the Catholic church for more than 20 years and was a member of the Altar Society.
Her husband died Oct. 15, 1987. She also was preceded in death by her parents and two foster children, Marilou Jarvis and Jane Adams.
Survivors include a son, Philip W. Phillips of Georgetown, Texas; a daughter, Mari Lisbeth Dobbins of Lawrence; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; five foster grandchildren; and two foster great-grandchildren.
Vigil service will be 7 tonight at Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Ulysses. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church, with the Rev. James P. Dieker officiating. Burial will be at Ulysses Cemetery.
Visitation is until 5 p.m. today at Garnand Funeral Home, Ulysses. Memorials are suggested to Park View Assisted Living, in care of the funeral home, 405 W. Grant Ave., Ulysses, KS 67880.
