Mary Alice Torson McGillivray

DIGHTON -- Mary Alice Torson McGillivray, 92, died Friday, Oct. 17, 2008, at Lane County Long Term Care in Dighton.

She was born Feb. 3, 1916, in Clay Center, to Martin A. and Rachel Derringer Teeters. The family moved to Lane County in 1929. She attended Dighton High School before marrying Vernon Torson on Aug. 28, 1932, in Scott City. He died June 29, 1973. On May 20, 1977, she married George McGillivray in Dighton. He died April 22, 1982. She also was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Bill Torson; a daughter, Dixie McLendon; five sisters, Donna Winter, Rachel Braun, Ida Burk, Clara Mae Wright and Irma Smith; and a brother, Frank Teeters.

While raising her children, she worked for a time as a cook for the school system and cleaned the First Christian Church. After her children were older, she went to nursing school in Dodge City and became a licensed practical nurse and worked at Lane County Hospital. During her second marriage, she lived in Ulysses before returning to Dighton in 1982. She was a member of First Christian Church of Dighton and enjoyed knitting, crocheting, playing cards, dancing and the bingo games at the long term care center.

Survivors include five sons, Vernon Torson Jr., Rick Torson and Victor Torson, all of Dighton, Martin Torson of Scott City, and Tony Torson of Sublette; three daughters, Mary Jane Travis, Beverly Bockelman and Melva Barnett, all of Dighton; a brother, Don Teeters of Miami, Okla.; a sister, Eva Marie Smith of Scott City; 50 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First Christian Church in Dighton, with the Rev. Howard Bever officiating. Burial will be in Dighton Memorial Cemetery.

Visitation is until 8 tonight at Boomhower Funeral Home in Dighton. Condolences may be sent at garnandfh@sbcglobal.net. Memorials are suggested to First Christian Church, in care of the funeral home.
