Dreamers of a white Christmas will dream no more this Saturday, when downtown Garden City will light up with the Burtis Motors' White Lights Night Christmas Parade.

At least 35 entries, including carolers, floats, classic cars and instrumental music will be featured at the Main Street Parade, beginning at 6 p.m. Saturday, said Beverly Schmitz Glass, Downtown Vision's executive director.

New to this year's festivities will be food venders along the parade route, including hot apple cider, hot chocolate, popcorn, roasted nuts and East and West coast-style hot dogs, Glass said.

"The only way we would cancel it is if the wind is just unbelievably howling or there's sleet," she said. "But with conditions the way they are now, we're not expecting it."

Earlier in the day, beginning at 3 p.m., is Commerce Bank's Tuba Christmas concert on Grant Avenue. The public can hear traditional yuletide carols belted from tuba and euphonium players from around the area. Hot chocolate will be served and admission is free. Following the concert, members of the Garden City Choral and Symphony Union will be strolling up and down Main Street entertaining shoppers with special holiday songs and favorite Christmas classics.

Following Tuba Christmas and beginning at 4 p.m. at the Downtown Vision office, 413 N. Main St., the Finney County Preservation Alliance will present "Warmin' in the Windsor," a soup sale fundraiser. Homemade chicken and noodle soup and chili are being offered at $3 for a 12 oz, walk-around cup. Proceeds will benefit continued work on the Windsor Hotel and other projects, Glass said.

On Sunday, at the corners of Main Street and Grant Avenue, Western State Bank will sponsor free Christmas carriage rides from 2 to 4 p.m. The bank also is planning to sponsor rides Dec. 19, at the same time and location. Regan & Co. Real Estate will be sponsoring carriage rides downtown from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Dec. 17, as well.

Other events on tap this weekend include the following:

* The annual Vespers Concert, which begins at 3 p.m. Sunday in the auditorium of the Pauline Joyce Fine Arts Building, will include the Garden City Community College Concert Choir, Garden City's community chorus, the select College Singers ensemble and two groups of GCCC string musicians.

Admission is free.

GCCC Vocal Music Director Clay Wright is conducting, with String Music Director Doug Beyer leading the instrumental ensembles and Carolyn Klassen, keyboard instructor, serving as piano and organ accompanist.

The program, one of the longest standing holiday traditions in southwest Kansas, will feature a number of seasonal selections. More than 60 vocal and instrumental musicians from Beeler, Dighton, Dodge City, Garfield, Ingalls, Kalvesta, Lakin, Satanta, Scott City and Ulysses, as well as Holcomb and Garden City, will be involved.

* Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Finney and Kearny Counties and the Finney County United Way will be hosting a charity gift auction event and retro-holiday party, Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree, from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday at the Fiesta Courtyard, 1810 Buffalo Jones Ave. Tickets are $15 per person or $25 per couple. For more information, call 275-2424.

* Area artist and GCCC instructor Brian McCallum will be holding an annual pottery open house from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at 601 E. Hamline St.
