Old man winter has made his comeback as several inches of snow fell late Thursday and continued through this morning, covering southwest Kansas in a blanket of white.
A wide range of snow accumulations developed across the region by late Thursday night and early this morning, with between four and five inches of snow reported in Garden City as of late Thursday night and about six inches in Ulysses, according to officials at the Dodge City National Weather Service office. Snow accumulations through this morning weren't available for Garden City and Ulysses.
It was snowing lightly in Garden City as of 10 a.m. today, but the NWS wasn't expecting anymore accumulation throughout the day.
Most counties in southwest Kansas were reporting no major accidents due to the weather.
Workers at the Gray County and Hamilton County sheriff's offices said this morning that they had received reports of some cars sliding into ditches.
Hamilton County reported five to six inches of snow. Law enforcement officials in Wichita County measured five inches, Kearny County officials estimated six inches, Scott County reported seven to eight inches and Stevens County officials said four to five inches had fallen, with some drifting.
The National Weather Service in Dodge City reported 11 inches near Ingalls.
NWS reported five inches at the northeast edge of Holcomb.
The following school districts canceled classes today because of the winter weather:
Cimarron-Ensign USD 102, Copeland USD 476, Deerfield USD 216, Garden City USD 457, St. Dominic and St. Mary Catholic schools in Garden City; Holcomb USD 363; Hugoton USD 210; Ingalls USD 477; Moscow USD 209; Montezuma USD 371; Satanta USD 507; Syracuse USD 494; Stanton County USD 452; Sublette USD 374; and Ulysses USD 214. Lakin USD 215 and Scott City USD 466 were running two hours late.
According to the National Weather Service, Friday night is expected to be partly cloudy with a low around 11 degrees and a wind chill as low as minus 2.
Saturday is expected to have mostly sunny skies with a high of 33 degrees. Saturday night will be partly cloudy with a low around 17 degrees, and Sunday partly sunny skies are expected with a high near 37.
A chance of freezing drizzle is expected around midnight Sunday, mixing with snow after 1 a.m. Skies will be mostly cloudy with a low around 21 degrees and a 20 percent chance of precipitation.
