A case management hearing has been set for a teacher accused of stealing three laptops.
Claudia Piñon appeared in court today and was charged with three counts of felony theft, which are level 9 person felonies. Her case management hearing has been set for Dec. 17.
Piñon, 36, 2004 N. Ninth St., a Spanish teacher at GCHS and New Outlook Academy, was arrested Oct. 12 on allegations of felony theft, theft of services and deprivation of property.
Finney County Attorney John Wheeler said the laptops were three IBM Thinkpad computers, property of USD 457.
Garden City Police Sgt. Michael Reagle said the school district contacted police about the three missing laptops at GCHS, valued at $3,297. After an investigation, police were led to believe Piñon took the laptops assigned to her classroom without permission.
Reagle said one of the laptops showed up at a repair shop in Liberal.
Rick Atha, USD 457 superintendent, said that no disciplinary action has been taken against Piñon at this time.

How about some positives about USD 457??
It is very disappointing to me that most of the publicity USD 457 receives from the Telegram is negative! Instead of focusing all of your attention on the few teachers who have made some bad choices, why don't you display all of the awesome good things that are going on all over this district! We are in a school district with some great students and great teachers!
