Halloween not a dress-up affair for all schools in Garden City

Vampires, fairy princesses, witches, angels and mummies walked the halls of Edith Scheuerman Elementary School on Friday afternoon.

Children at the school dressed up in their Halloween costumes and paraded around the school's halls, showing their outfits off to their teachers and parents.
The school's staff even dressed up for the event: There was a mad scientist, a nurse, Little Red Riding Hood, a mouse and others.
Edith Scheuerman is one of a few schools in Garden City that allow children to dress up for Halloween.
Roy Cessna, public information coordinator, said it's up to each school whether to hold a party and let kids dress in their Halloween costumes. For the buildings that do allow it, the kids have to bring a costume to school that they can easily change into. The child must be able to see and hear clearly in the costume, and they also must be able to move in the costume.
Children weren't allowed to bring plastic knives or toys to school with their costumes or have fake blood on their costumes, Cessna said.
Edith Scheuerman, Florence Wilson , Gertrude Walker and Jennie Wilson elementary schools had parties and parades for kids, where they dressed up in their Halloween costumes.
At Alta Brown Elementary School, kids celebrated Drug Free Week by having a parade, wearing costumes and saying "boo" to drugs.
Buffalo Jones and Victor Ornelas elementary schools had fall parties with the kids in normal street clothes. There were no parties or costumes at Plymell, Garfield, Georgia Matthews or Jennie Barker elementary schools.
Students at St. Dominic Catholic School also dressed up and paraded around the office and classrooms, and had classroom parties after the parade. At St. Mary, students enjoyed a parent-sponsored fall festival with games, candy, treats and prizes. They also dressed in costume and did a parade to kick off the festival.
Donna Wartman, school librarian at Edith Scheuerman, along with other staff dressed up as a series of children's books by Laura Numeroff. Wartman dressed as a pig after the book, "If you Give a Pig a Pancake."
Wartman said children at Edith Scheuerman enjoyed Friday's activities.
"They love it. They've been excited all day," Wartman said.
Alicia Cruz, Janae Hiner and Jameel Robinson, all 9, said they like dressing up and eating candy in their third-grade classroom.
Cruz was a witch, Hiner was a barbed-wire witch and Robinson was a zombie.
"I like my costume because it's really awesome," Cruz said. "It's very fun."
Hiner's witch costume had brown yarn on her black shirt, which resembled a barbed-wire fence.
Children in Michelle Smith's third-grade class listened to Halloween music, ate candy and visited with each other after the parade ended. Smith dressed as an army woman in a camouflage shirt and pants.
Not all schools allow children to dress up for Halloween. Smith said as a child she didn't, and Wartman said she remembers always wearing costumes to school when she was young.
Smith said the kids in her classroom enjoyed the Halloween activities.
"They love the parade," she said.
