The Garden City city prosecutor has submitted her resignation, effective in February.
Kara Schartz, 29, has been the city prosecutor since August 2006. She was hired after receiving her law degree from the University of Kansas in May 2006.
Schartz is from Cimarron.
Her last day as city prosecutor will be Feb. 19, when she will be joining Callahan Law, 212 W. Pine St.
Schartz said this morning that she left the job with the city for further advancement in her career.
"I greatly appreciated every opportunity this job has given me to grow. It was my first job out of law school," she said.
City Manager Matt Allen said he appreciated Schartz's service to Garden City.
"We wish Kara well in her new position. She can advance her career and remain in Garden City. That is a great opportunity for her. Kara has been an asset to our organization, and we appreciate her service to the community of Garden City. While it is a loss for our organization, we are happy for her," he said.
The city will begin its search for a city prosecutor immediately, but Allen said he doesn't think the position will be filled before Schartz's last day.
"It affects operations when the prosecutor is gone. The city attorney takes over in the prosecutor's absence. We've had to do that before, it's not unusual," he said.
Allen said City Attorney Randy Grisell will step in for the time between Schartz's last day and the hiring of a new prosecutor.
The office of the city prosecutor handles all cases prosecuted in Garden City Municipal Court.
