Teacher contract vote extended

Published 7/1/2009 in Local News : Education

The vote on the proposed 2009-2010 negotiated agreement for USD 457 teachers has been extended until 5 p.m. Thursday.

The initial vote was held Tuesday, but at the end of the day, a majority of teachers hadn't voted, so voting was extended, according to Roy Cessna, public information coordinator for the school district.

The Garden City Educators Association and the USD 457 Board of Education reached a tentative agreement after several meetings of negotiations.

Under the proposed contract, the teachers' salary schedule from last year would remain the same as this year's schedule. Teachers whose salaries aren't frozen on the schedule — meaning they can't receive more money unless they start working on an advanced degree — would receive raises for the next step on the salary schedule, and teachers whose salaries are frozen would remain the same.

A beginning teacher in the district would make a base salary of $34,239.

Teachers can submit their votes by e-mailing Jo Ann Mangan, head negotiator for the Garden City Educators Association.

Those who need more information on the proposed agreement can go to INSIDE USD 457, the district's Intranet Web site, and find information under the "Recent News" section.
