School board adjusts for bond project

During a short meeting this morning, the Garden City USD 457 Board of Education amended the 2008-09 bond and interest fund budget and accepted a bid for kitchen equipment for an elementary school.

The 2008-09 budget was amended because the district is paying more in interest because of the sale of $10 million in bonds in December. The 2008-09 budget was changed to reflect that, said Kathleen Whitley, financial officer for USD 457.

The 2008-09 budget was created before the bond issue passed, Whitley said, which is why the budget had to be amended.

The $10 million in bonds sold in December were for a portion of the costs of construction of a new high school and purchase of the land for the school, renovating Garfield Elementary School and remodeling the existing high school and Abe Hubert Middle School.

All of the bonds for the district's $97.5 million facilities upgrade have been sold. The bonds will be used to build a new $92.5 million high school that will be located north of Mary Street and east of Campus Drive, turning Garfield Elementary School into a centralized early childhood center, converting Abe Hubert into an elementary school, converting the main GCHS building into a middle school, and moving New Outlook Academy into J.D. Adams Hall, which sits adjacent to the current high school building.

Also at the meeting, the Board of Education accepted a bid of $15,885 from Sunflower Restaurant Supply, Salina, for kitchen equipment for the Garfield Elementary School renovation. The school will receive a freezer, oven, milk cooler, microwave and a prep cart with a work table.

The board also:

  • Accepted a grant of $26,254 from the Kansas State Board of Education for funding for the Migrant Summer Services program.
  • Entered into an agreement with Sandhill Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine LLC, Garden City, to provide services to high school athletic programs and high school athletes. USD 457 will pay Sandhill Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine LLC $20,400.
  • Approved a district wellness plan. The plan says that all meals will comply with USDA regulations and that restaurant brand name food items, unless provided by Nutrition Services in combination with a balanced meal, will not be allowed in elementary, intermediate or middle school cafeterias at meal times. Sack lunches that contain brand name food items, such as fast foods, commercial pizza, restaurant to-go meals or pop, will not be allowed.
  • Approved handbooks for Abe Hubert Middle School, Charles O. Stones Elementary School, Edith Scheuerman Elementary School, Garden City High School, special education, substitute teachers and staff and curriculum development.
  • Hired the following: Tina Gross, Lewiston, Mich., special education at Buffalo Jones Elementary School; Jeffrey Kelley, Pontiac, Mich., six-trait writing at Georgia Matthews Elementary School; George Koch, Emmett, Mich., mathematics at GCHS; Rick Radle, Hudsonville, Mich., biology at GCHS; Alesha Anderson, Garden City, chemistry and general science at GCHS; Marc Baxter, Centerville, Utah, orchestra at Bernadine Sitts and Charles O. Stones intermediate centers; Anthony Bessire, Ulysses, ESL science at GCHS; Renae Hukill, Clinton, Mich., early childhood special education at Buffalo Jones; Kimberly Rockwell, Jenison, Mich., fifth grade communications and social studies at Charles O. Stones; and Charles Cawby as director of plant facilities.
  • Accepted the following resignations: Lucas Pie-Kiser, fifth and sixth grade orchestra teacher; and Jefferson Walker, mechanic.
