Harvest is nearing completion in southwest Kansas, and according to local farmers and co-op officials, yields are all over the board.

Gary Friesen, Scott Co-op Association, said harvest is 80 to 85 percent complete in Scott County. He said he's pleased with the results so far.

"We started out at yields of 40 bushels per acre, but lately it's been more than that," he said. "It's been a good harvest."

Friesen reported the wheat markets closed at $4.91 per bushel Thursday. Friday, the markets were closed because of the holiday weekend.

Projected rain this weekend has some farmers worried, but Wichita County's Greg Fletcher, ADM Grain, isn't one of them.

"I don't worry," he said. "If it rains, it rains."

Fletcher said he would rather not have harvest delayed but "sometimes we need rain." Fletcher said Wichita County's harvest was 70 percent completed Friday, and Thursday the price was $4.96 per bushel.

Ken Jameson, Garden City Co-op, said he wants the rain to hold off just a little longer. He said average yields in Finney County varied and that he'd seen from 15 to 85 bushels per acre. Jameson said the wheat market closed with wheat at $4.94.

Jay Garetson, Providence Grain, said Haskell County had good test weights and that harvest is 75 percent completed. Wheat prices closed at $4.97 Thursday.

Hamilton County's harvest is 95 percent done, according to Dave Erwin, Syracuse Co-op Exchange. He said the yields had varied, with wheat closing Thursday at $4.94.

Dodge City Co-op's Cimarron office reported the harvest is 90 percent done, and the average yield is about 50 bushels per acre, with wheat closing Thursday at $4.99.

Most area co-ops reported the wheat is in good condition.

According to the Kansas Wheat Harvest Daily report Friday on KSWheat.com, United Plains Ag locations in Tribune and Sharon Springs are about 50 percent done with harvest and custom harvesters are leaving Greeley County to head north.
