WAMEGO — Holcomb's  boys and Greeley County's girls teams defended their respective state championships here Saturday at the 2009 Kansas High School Cross Country Championships held  at Wamego Country Club.
But the biggest surprise and stunning performance came from the Greeley County boys which knocked off defending champion and top-ranked Ness City to claim its Class 1A state title.
Stanton County senior Eric Ruth claimed the Class 2A boys individual championship with a sterling performance while Wichita County's Paige Wells capped off a whirlwind finish to her season by placing second in the Class 2A girls race and leading the Lady Indians to a third-place team finish.
The Longhorns won the Class 3A title for the second year in a row, this time being led by seniors Michael Wolf and JaCee Jarnagin, who placed fourth and fifth individually. They scored 77 points to outdistance runner-up Minneapolis' 88 points.
For the Jackrabbits of Greeley County, the boys scored 24 points to just edge Ness City by one point. Senior Isaac Wilson took third place for Greeley County to pace the stunning victory.
In the girls 1A chase, Madison Moser led the Lady Jackrabbits with a third place finish to cap off her senior year as well.  Greeley County tallied 34 points to take an 11-point victory over last year's runner-up Burrton, which finished with 45 points.
Scott City's Sam McDaniel placed 10th to pace the southwest Kansas contingent in Class 4A boys.  Kayla Thomas of South Gray was seventh in Class 1A girls.
