SPORTS: Prep Cross Country Regional Roundup

By The TelegramHolcomb’s boys cross country team, the defending state champion in Class 3A, scored 55 points to easily outdistance runner-up Norton to claim the regional cross country title at Cimarron on Saturday.
Lakin’s Kayson Matthews claimed the individual title with a time of 17:02.25 over the 5-kilometer race. Holcomb’s Michael Wolf was second in a time of 17:05.73.
On the girls side, Holcomb freshman Karissa Pena qualified for state by placing fifth in 16:45.45. Julia Rosales from Lakin followed her in sixth, with a time of 16:56.28 and her teammate, Jaden Bolmer, also made it to state placing 11th in 17:14.25. Ellinwood won with girls’ team title with 47 points.
——————At Meade, Stanton County’s Eric Ruth led the Trojans to the Class 2A regional cross country title by claiming the individual crown with a time of 17:43.04. The Trojans outpaced runner-up Hutchinson Trinity for the team honors with 46 points to 53.
On the girls side, Wichita County’s Lady Indians were paced by freshman Paige Wells’ invididual victory en route to the team title with a winning time of 16:49.94 over the 4-kilometer layout at Meade Country Club.
South Gray’s Kayla Thomas won the Class 1A girls competition with a time of 17:14.88 while Kaleb Batman and Slade Lowen finished fifth and sixth individual in leading the Ingalls Bulldogs to the 1A boys team crown with 20 points to runner-up South Gray’s 46.
——————At Dodge City, Garden City’s Jonny Bernasky was the lone Buffaloes’ runner to advance to the Class 6A state meet in Lawrence next weekend by finishing fifth at the regional meet which was run over the Mariah Hills Golf Course. Bernasky finished with a time of 17:50.00.
——————At Wheatland/Grinnell, Madison Moser paced the Greeley County Lady Jackrabbits to the team title by claiming first with a time of 16:18.0 while the team scored 16 points to Ness City’s 23. Kennedy Schneider and Carly Robertson also placed in the top 10, Schneider in fifth place (17:10.0) and Robertson ninth (17:26.00).
On the boys side, the battle between top-ranked Ness City and the Greeley County squad continued to be close as Ness City won with 20 points but Greeley County was right on the heels with 22 points. Isaac Wilson led the Jackrabbits with a runner-up finish in a time of 17:32.0. Kellum Schneider (18:05.00), Clay Robertson (18:13.00) and Troy Wineinger (18:37.00) all finished in the top 10.
