Poll: Slim majority favor smoking ban in private clubs

In the latest www.gctelegram.com poll, a slight majority of votes were in favor of keeping in place a smoking ordinance for Class A clubs, such as the American Legion and VFW.

About 54 percent of votes, or 205 of 376, were for keeping the ban in place.

Of the remaining votes, 122 (about 32 percent) were for excluding all Class A clubs (nonprofit social, fraternal or war veterans clubs) from the ban, while 21 (about 5 percent) were for excluding only veterans' clubs from the ban. Seven percent of votes were for the option "none of the above."

The smoking ordinance, which has been in place for about a year and a half, bans smoking in most public places, such as bars, restaurants and clubs. The issue came up with the City Commission recently when Commissioner John Doll suggested amending the ordinance to exclude the Class A clubs.

Doll said he feels veterans have earned the right through serving and fighting for their country to make the decision themselves of whether they can smoke inside their clubs.
