Deerfield Middle School and Deerfield High School are looking for a new principal in wake of Nancy Harness' decision to resign the combo-post at the end of this contract year.
Harness, who also serves as Garden City mayor, said on Friday that she has enjoyed her time in Deerfield. She's looking to continue working in education, possibly with youth that have dropped out of high school or at a post-secondary level, though she declined to say where.
Harness said she plans to continue living in Garden City.
She's also planning to pursue her master's degree in counseling at Fort Hays State University.
Harness has worked in Deerfield schools for two years. She was the high school principal and athletic director last year.
Jon Ansley, Superintendent of Deerfield USD 216, said Friday was the last day for applications for the position. He said a committee made up of teachers, parents and board members will narrow the field of 40 applicants down next week.
Ansley said the position will be filled by the end of this month.
