After working on a community college level to help students transition from high school to college, Nancy Harness plans to focus on the same issue next school year, but this time in a different job.

Harness, Garden City Community College's dean of continuing education and community services, has resigned to work as principal and athletic director at Deerfield High School, GCCC President Carol Ballantyne announced at a Board of Trustees meeting Wednesday night.

Harness' last day at GCCC will be June 20, and she'll start in Deerfield in July or August.

A Garden City commissioner, Harness said she plans to continue living in Garden City and serving on the commission. Harness said she expects the new position will give her more direct contact with students than she has in her current job.

Starting in 1991, she worked as an instructor, then director, at the Finney County Community Learning Center -- the predecessor to the Adult Learning Center now housed at GCCC. As dean, a job she took in 2005, Harness oversees the learning center, along with programs including the Business and Industry Institute, the Continuing Education and Community Services Division and the Small Business Development Center.

A major focus in her job during the past year has been helping improve the transition process for students moving from high school to college, and from the Adult Learning Center's English as a Second Language and GED programs to regular college courses.

Harness said that at Deerfield, she'll be able to work on transition from another level, helping students get ready for their post-high-school plans.

"I'm really looking forward to working with staff out there, and I'm excited about working with students," she said.

She said that as principal, she'll serve as "an ambassador for the college at Deerfield."

At Deerfield, Harness will be paid $60,000 plus benefits, according to Superintendent Jon Ansley. Her current salarly at GCCC is $69,069.
