Scott City is trying to raise $70,000 more for the $300,000 playground that will be built by volunteers next month.
The playground, called Park on the Plains, will be built the week of Oct. 19 in Patton Park. To raise the remaining money, coordinators of the project said they're ready to take advantage of opportunities to let people from outside Scott City help to raise funds for the playground.
Volunteers with the project will sell concessions at the barrel racing event in Scott City this weekend, as well as hold a luau for community members on Saturday.
Volunteers also will serve concessions at Whimmydiddle, Scott City's annual craft fair, Sept. 26 in Patton Park.
The playground will be a 13,000 square-foot oasis for kids that will include a grain elevator, an old-fashioned car and a tractor, along with normal playground equipment like monkey bars and swings.
The playground will be built in Patton Park with recycled plastic and will be wheelchair accessible, said Julie Eikenberry, grant writer and site captain for the project.
At the concessions at the barrel racing event this weekend, which will take place at the fairgrounds, volunteers will serve sloppy joes Friday, ham and beans on Saturday and biscuits and gravy and donuts on Sunday morning and pizza for the afternoon.
At the luau event, which starts at 5 p.m. Saturday in Patton Park, there will be a pie toss, hula lessons, a water-balloon toss and other children's games. The games range from 25 cents to $3 each, Eikenberry said.
A meal will begin at 7:30 p.m. and will cost $6 for adults and $2 for children. There also will be a dance from 8 to 11 p.m., with the cost of $5 for adults and children 12 and younger for free.
The committee also is planning an event on Oct. 3 called Night on the Red Carpet, with tickets available for $35 per person or $60 per couple. Eikenberry said the event will be held at Scott City's Majestic Theater and will include a dinner, along with more than 80 silent and live auction items.
"We're trying to get that last bit of money in," Eikenberry said.
Scott City volunteers have been working on the project for months, working with playground designers from Leathers and Associates, a company based out of New York, and also getting children's input into the project.
Jamie Parkinson, publicity coordinator and team captain, said there will be more than 900 volunteers building the playground in October.
There still are ways people can donate to the project, Parkinson and Eikenberry said. People can donate time or materials to build the playground or also give monetary donations.
The $300,000 playground isn't the only positive aspect that will come out of the months of preparation for the project, Eikenberry said.
"We never dreamed there could be so many people involved. It's been such a community booster," Eikenberry said, adding that the friendship that the community gains will be the greatest part of the project.
