SATANTA — James Jay Schreibvogel, 23, a longtime resident of Satanta before moving to Goodland, died Monday, June 29, 2009, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident in Grant County while on his way to work in Satanta.
He was born July 15, 1985, in Garden City, to Ray Alan Schreibvogel and Patience A. Birney, and was adopted by Addie and Doris Schreibvogel. He graduated from Satanta High School in 2004 and graduated from Northwest Technical School, Goodland, with high honors in computer technology.
On July 31, 2004, he married Toniarae "Tonia" Schneider in rural Satanta. They moved to Goodland in August 2004.
A mechanic for Satanta Auto & Tire Service, Mr. Schreibvogel was in the process of moving back to the Satanta area at the time of his accident. He was a member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church at Satanta. His hobbies included collecting eagles, hunting pheasants and deer and working on cars in his spare time. He loved spending time with his family.
In addition to his wife, survivors include three daughters, Autumn, Amelia and Kathrine Schreibvogel, all of the home; his adopted mother, of Satanta; his father, of Satanta; a half brother, Nathaniel L. Birney of Sublette; a sister, Azalea of Florida; a stepsister, Andrea Birney of Sublette; and several uncles, aunts, cousins, nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his mother; a daughter, Emily Schreibvogel; and his adopted father.
Vigil service will be 7 p.m. Thursday at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, Satanta. Funeral Mass will be 2 p.m. Friday at the church, with the Rev. Jim P. Dieker officiating. Burial will be at Dudley Township Cemetery in Satanta.
Visitation hours are 2 to 8 p.m. today and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday at Haskell County Funeral Home, Sublette. A memorial has been established for the family. Memorials may be left at Shopping Stop True Value in Satanta or mailed to the funeral home, Box 607, Sublette, KS 67877.
